In 2007 Russell & Matt volunteered to build a machine thing to go in howies shop window in Carnaby Street. It took longer than they thought, but building it taught them all sorts of interesting things about building, playfulness, slowness, making things with your friends and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The talk is about those things and other stuff that seems related. There are jokes and funny videos from the internet.

John has been involved in a number of social ventures over the last 20 years. He explains how they are always a mixture of love (social purpose) and greed (capital, investment, equity and personal ambition), putting it this way allows John to make it clear that there is an inbuilt conflict at the heart of every such venture. John’s overall point it is that it is important to have a really deep, honest and early conversation about these things and not assume that everyone wants, expects or needs the same things.

Alastair references his book, “Hell and High Water: Climate Change, Hope and the Human Condition” considering that politics alone is not enough to tackle the scale and depth of the problem that faces us. We have become addicted to false aspirations and become weakened in our authenticity. Such hubris leads to violence not just against one another, but to the Earth. We must therefore fight climate change in all the outer ways, for sure, but also, we must seek to rekindle the inner life. As such, there may not be many grounds for optimism about what our mainstream society is likely to do about climate change, but there is considerable scope for hope – hope in the gradual restoration of both ourselves and the human condition in general.
